Engineering industrial safety with PermaShield
PermaShield®, fume exhaust duct system was developed to challenges of reliability and fire safety.
Semiconductor manufacturing environments demand increasingly advanced safety solutions as facilities manage highly corrosive and hazardous exhaust streams. PermaShield®, a hybrid coated stainless steel fume exhaust duct system, provides a reliable and inherently safe approach to handling these challenges while supporting compliance with evolving industry standards.
The growing need for safer fume exhaust systems
Process exhaust systems play a critical role in protecting both facilities and personnel. Semiconductor manufacturing, in particular, produces corrosive and potentially flammable fumes that require robust and dependable containment. Historically, facilities have relied on reactive fire protection measures such as sprinklers or gas-based suppression systems. However, these approaches can allow damage to occur before activation, increasing operational risk and potential downtime. As a result, the industry is shifting toward solutions that address safety at the source.
PermaShield was originally developed in the 1990s as a custom solution for an IBM semiconductor facility seeking to meet strict insurance requirements while improving system durability. The result was a hybrid coated stainless steel duct system specifically designed to withstand aggressive chemical exhaust while maintaining long-term performance. Following its introduction, PermaShield quickly became recognised as a benchmark for safety and quality in semiconductor applications. Its non-combustible construction enables it to safely convey hazardous exhaust without contributing to flame spread or generating significant smoke in the event of a fire.
Evolving building codes and insurance requirements increasingly favour non-combustible materials such as stainless steel for process exhaust systems. While combustible materials like fiberglass may still be used in certain applications, they often require additional fire protection measures, including internal sprinkler systems and protective coatings. These additional measures can increase both system complexity and overall cost, while also introducing operational considerations such as water management and maintenance.
Proven performance through independent testing
PermaShield is FM 4922 approved for use as a fume exhaust system without the need for internal fire suppression. This approval reflects rigorous testing to validate compliance with high standards for fire safety and property loss prevention. Independent ASTM E-84 testing confirms a flame spread rating of “0” and a smoke generation index below “20.” These results demonstrate that the system does not support combustion or produce significant smoke, helping to minimise fire-related risk within critical environments.
While PermaShield has a strong track record in semiconductor manufacturing, its application has expanded into other industries with demanding exhaust requirements. These include wastewater treatment, research laboratories, metal finishing, and energy facilities. Across these sectors, operators benefit from a combination of durability, safety, and reduced reliance on additional fire protection systems.
Designing safety into the system
Mike Baranski, Senior Manager Business Development, highlighted the importance of integrating safety directly into system design: “Facilities today are looking to eliminate risk wherever possible rather than depend on secondary mitigation measures. By using non-combustible materials engineered for harsh exhaust conditions, solutions like PermaShield help simplify compliance, reduce fire exposure, and support more reliable long-term operation.”
As regulatory requirements continue to evolve, facilities must adopt solutions that not only meet current standards but also provide flexibility for the future. Materials that deliver inherent safety and long-term durability are becoming increasingly critical to achieving this goal. PermaShield positions operators to meet these expectations, offering a proven approach to safe and efficient process exhaust management across a range of industries.
